Okay, the changes are not terribly dramatic aside from the rewrite of the Foods and Feeding chapter (described on the previous page).
I also redid the chapter on Quarantines and Entrance Requirements to reflect my further research into the confusing issue of microchipping.
I
regret to inform you that my previous recommendations regarding microchipping were erroneous (sorry 'bout that). Avid and Home Again are
BOTH the wrong chip to have if you are traveling outside the U.S. Neither one meets the international (ISO) standard. If you come
from Canada (or anywhere else, for that matter), you probably are okay. Their chips are ISO compatible. It's only in the U.S. that
we are out of step with the world. Really, if you plan to spend much time in U.S. territory you should probably have both. The ISO
chip is of little use right now in the U.S. because almost nobody has a scanner that will read it, but when you get outside the U.S.
(even to Canada or Mexico), the reverse applies. What a mess!
Here is my solution. You can go two different ways. 1) Get a second
chip implanted. You can do this in the U.S. by searching out the newly introduced Bayer chip, called ResQ. Most likely place to track
it down would be at a Banfield Pet Hospital (It's a large chain. You probably can find one located in a coastal area. They are often
associated with PetSmart stores. Actually last thing I knew, Banfield was offering a two-chips-for-the-price-of-one
deal. Check it out.) Or you can order an ISO chip from www.pettravel.com and have your vet implant it. Or you can get an ISO chip
implanted once you get underway and you are out of the U.S. Or, you can 2) buy your own scanner (check out www.pettravel.com)
for the chip your pet has (may be more economical if you have several pets, probably more expensive if you have only one pet).
I
also added the Manchioneel tree, common in the Caribbean, to the Local and Regional Dangers chapter. Not much else has changed. None
of my disease or treatment recommendations have been altered. Hope you guys who bought the earlier versions haven't had a lot of trouble
based on my previous microchip info. Sorry, if you did. And thanks again to everybody who bought the book or who has passed along
the word to friends.
